Other NBA teams are certainly keeping an eye to San Antonio Spurs front office personnel and coaching staff, after losing Danny Ferry to the Atlanta Hawks last month, San Antonio's popular assistant coach Don Newman is going to the Washington Wizards, where he will serve as top assistant under head coach Randy Wittman.
The Wizards announced Newman’s hiring on Monday.
Newman had been with the Spurs for seven seasons and served as the team’s defensive coordinator for the past five seasons. He began his NBA coaching career with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1999 as an assistant under George Karl. He joined the New Jersey Nets staff in 2003 and was added to the Spurs staff on June 28, 2004.
Newman played college basketball at University of Idaho and was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1980. He played three seasons in the Continental Basketball Association before logging seven seasons in the Canadian Football League.
“We hate to lose Don, but we wish him all the best in Washington,” Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. (Hat tip to Spurs Nation)
